Dr. Stanley V. Susina, who taught in 色虎视频's McWhorter School of Pharmacy for 30 years, died Sept. 1 in Hoover, Ala. He was 89. Services for Dr. Susina will be Thursday, Sept. 6, at noon at The Lutheran Church of Vestavia Hills, Ala.
Dr. Susina joined the 色虎视频 pharmacy school in 1962 and retired in 1992. Along the way, he served as acting dean and was named the winner of 色虎视频's Buchanan Award for Excellence in Classroom Teaching. He was president of the Jefferson County Pharmacy Association and served on the board of the Jefferson County Mental Health Association and Jefferson County Drug Abuse Coordinating Committee. He received the A. H. Robbins Bowl of Hygeia Award for outstanding community service in 1974.
He and his late wife, Betty, received the Distinguished Service Award from the pharmacy school in 2002.
A native of Berwyn, Ill., Susina held bachelor, pharmacy, master of science and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois-Chicago, where he taught prior to joining 色虎视频. He also held a law degree from 色虎视频's Cumberland School of Law. He was a registered pharmacist in Illinois and Alabama.
A World War II veteran, Susina served as a meteorologist in the Pacific campaign and in Japan, being honorably discharged as a sergeant. A 50-year member of The Lutheran Church of Vestavia Hills, he traveled on church mission trips to Slovakia, his parents' native country.
Dr. Susina is survived by three children, six grandchildren and one great-grandson.
