Hamlet was not a Christian, but his extended meditations were emblematic of Christianity at the time the Shakespearian play was written.聽 So stated Dr. Peter Kaufman, Professor of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond, speaking to religion students and University Fellows at 色虎视频 Oct. 7.

In a lecture entitled 鈥淗amlet鈥檚 Religion,鈥 Dr. Kaufman said Shakespeare wrote 鈥渙n the fly鈥 and that his work reflected, among other things, the religion of the times.聽 鈥淲e can use Hamlet to get a better understanding of the religion around Shakespeare,鈥 said Kaufman.

The religion of the late sixteenth century often represented a 鈥渄uality between Catholicism and Calvinism,鈥 said Kaufman, a medieval and Reformation-era historian.聽 Catholicism offered a set of rules for salvation, while Calvinism stated that salvation was pre-ordained.

鈥淏ut many Christians were somewhere between these two poles in a kind of hybrid faith,鈥 he said.聽 鈥淭hey were in the atmospheric condition in which Hamlet was written.鈥

Deep introspection was central to the religion of the era, said Kaufman.聽 He cited Hamlet鈥檚 soliloquies: 鈥淭o be or not to be,鈥 鈥淐onscience makes cowards of us all,鈥 and 鈥淚 do not know why I live.鈥澛 Such extended meditations made for the 鈥渢rue fortitude鈥 that most Christians sought, he said.

Christians also looked for 鈥渁 cleansing鈥 of their souls, said Kaufman.聽 Shakespeare provides such an example with Claudius, Hamlet鈥檚 uncle who killed his brother to gain the throne of Denmark.聽 Claudius is looking for cleansing of his sin but cannot find it, Kaufman noted.

Devotionals and church literature of the day exhibited the same kind of 鈥渟elf-flagellation鈥 in their content, said Kaufman, leading Christians to regard life somewhat somberly.聽 The character Angelo in Measure for Measure is heard to say, 鈥淲e are all frail,鈥 and Prospero in The Tempest adds, 鈥淢y ending is despair.鈥

A student asked Kaufman if there was any joy in religion during the era.聽 鈥淵es,鈥 he said with a smile, 鈥渢here were happy people, but there was a whole lot of groaning going on.鈥

Kaufman holds the George Matthews and Virginia Brinkley Modlin Chair in Leadership Studies at Richmond鈥檚 Jepson School of Leadership Studies.聽 Also professor emeritus of history and religious studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he is the author of seven books and numerous scholarly articles in patristic, medieval and reformation studies.
